Sitemaps that actually help
Only list pages you want in search
Leave out redirects, error pages, duplicates and anything marked noindex. A sitemap full of URLs that shouldn't rank sends mixed signals and wastes crawl attention.
Accurate lastmod beats frequent lastmod
Google uses the last-modified date when it trusts it. If every URL always says 'today', the date stops meaning anything. Update it when the content genuinely changes.
Tell search engines where it lives
Add a Sitemap: line to your robots.txt and submit the file in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Both will then check it for new URLs on their own schedule.
Static sitemaps go stale
A generated file is a snapshot. If you publish often, have your CMS or build process produce the sitemap automatically so new pages are never missing from it.
