Making sense of the numbers
Length should follow the query, not a target number
There's no word count Google rewards on its own. Look at what already ranks for your keyword: if the top results are short answers, a 3,000-word essay is padding. If they're deep guides, 400 words probably won't cover enough.
Short sentences read faster on phones
Once your average creeps above 20 words per sentence, readers start skimming. Split long sentences at the 'and' or 'which' — it's usually the quickest readability win.
Reading time sets expectations
Showing '6 min read' near the title helps people decide to stay. Visitors who know what they're signing up for tend to scroll further than those who get surprised by a wall of text.
Readability scores are a nudge, not a grade
The Flesch score only looks at sentence and word length, so technical writing will score 'hard' no matter what. Use it to compare drafts of the same piece rather than to hit a fixed number.
