Redirects done right
Redirect to the closest match, not the homepage
Sending every retired URL to the homepage is treated a lot like a 404. Point each one to the page that best replaces it, so both visitors and ranking signals land somewhere relevant.
Avoid chains
A → B → C wastes crawl time and slows visitors down. When you add new redirects, update older ones to point straight at the final destination.
Keep redirects in place for a long time
Search engines need to revisit the old URL to see the redirect, and bookmarks and backlinks keep sending traffic for years. Leave permanent redirects in place for at least a year — ideally indefinitely.
Update internal links too
A redirect is a safety net, not a fix. After a migration, update your navigation, sitemaps and in-content links to use the new URLs directly.
